[Original form] Perennial densely clumping herb. The plant has thick and tough fibrous roots covered with sand. The culm is erect, hard, with white pith inside, 50-250cm high, 3-5mm in diameter, with nodes mostly gathered at the base, 2-3 nodes, smooth and glabrous, with persistent withered yellow-brown leaf sheaths at the base. The leaf sheath is glabrous, with a membranous margin; the ligule is triangular or pointed-lanceolate, 5-10 (15) mm long; the leaf blade is longitudinally rolled, tough, 30-60 cm long, 5-6 mm wide, with raised veins and slightly rough on the upper side, and smooth and glabrous on the lower side. The panicle is (15-)30-60cm long, pyramidal in shape when flowering, with a smooth main axis; or angular and slightly rough, with thin branches, 2-6 clusters, flat and obliquely ascending, 8-17cm long, and naked at the base; the spikelets are 4.5-7mm long (excluding the awns), gray-green, with purple at the base, turning straw yellow when mature; the glumes are membranous, lanceolate, with a pointed or acute apex, the first glume is 4-5mm long, with 1 vein, and the second glumes are 2.5-3.5mm long. The third glume is 6-7mm long and has 3 veins; the outer seeds are 4-5mm long, thick and papery, with 2 micro-teeth at the top, densely pubescent on the back, with 5 veins, obtuse base, pubescent, about 0.5mm long, the awn is drawn out from between the outer seeds, erect or slightly curved, rough, not twisted, 5-15mm long, and easy to break off; the inner seeds are 3-4mm long, with 2 veins and no ridges, with pubescence between the veins; the anthers are 2.5-3.5mm long, with fine hairs at the tip. Flowering and fruiting period is from June to September.
