【English name】 RHIZOMA CURCUMAE LONGAE

[Other names] Turmeric, hairy turmeric, Baodingxiang, yellow silk turmeric

[Source] This product is the dried rhizome of Curcuma longa L., a plant of the ginger family. Dig it up in winter when the stems and leaves wither, wash it, boil or steam it until it is thoroughly cooked, dry it in the sun, and remove the fibrous roots.

[Properties] This product is irregularly oval, cylindrical or spindle-shaped, often curved, and some have short forked branches, 2 to 5 cm long and 1 to 3 cm in diameter. The surface is dark yellow, rough, with wrinkled texture and obvious links, as well as circular branch marks and root marks. The texture is solid and not easy to break. The cross section is brown to golden yellow, horny, with a waxy luster, obvious endodermal ring marks, and vascular bundles are scattered in dots. It has a unique aroma and tastes bitter and spicy.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: Epidermal cells are arranged in one row, the cells are flat and have thin walls. The cortex is broad and has leaf-mark vascular bundles; there are 6 to 8 rows of cork cells near the epidermis on the outside, which are flat, thin-walled and arranged in a relatively neat manner; the Caspian dots of the endodermal cells are obvious. The pericycle consists of 1 to 2 rows of thin-walled cells; the vascular bundles are limited, externally tough, scattered, more numerous near the pericycle and gradually decreasing inward. The thin-walled cells contain oil droplets, starch granules and reddish-brown pigments.

[Processing] Remove impurities, soak briefly, wash, soak thoroughly, cut into thick slices, and dry in the sun.

【Functions and indications】It can promote blood circulation, promote the flow of qi, unblock menstruation and relieve pain. Used for stabbing pain in the chest and flanks, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, rheumatic pain in the shoulders and arms, and swelling and pain from falls.

【Usage and Dosage】 3-9g; appropriate amount for external use.
