Mizilan is an evergreen shrub or small tree, 4-7m tall. Many branches, young parts often covered with star-shaped rusty scales. Odd-pinnate compound leaves are alternate, 5-12cm long, with narrow wings on the rachis; leaflets are 3-5, opposite, obovate to oblong, 2-7cm long, 1-3.5cm wide, obtuse at the apex, cuneate at the base, entire, and glabrous. The panicles are axillary; the flowers are polygamous and dioecious; the calyx is 5-lobed, with rounded lobes; the petals are 5, yellow, oblong to nearly rounded, and very fragrant; the stamens are 5, the filaments are connate into a simple tube, the petals are slightly short, and the apex is entire; the ovary is ovate, densely covered with yellow coarse hairs, the style is very short, and the stigma has scattered star-shaped scales. The berry is ovate or nearly spherical, about 1 cm in diameter, covered with scattered stellate hairs when young, and then becomes hairless. The seeds have a fleshy aril. Flowering period is from June to November.
