[Other names] Saffron, saffron

[Source] This product is the dried stigma of Crocus sativus L., a plant of the genus Crocus in the family Iridaceae.

[Properties] This product is linear, three-branched, and about 3cm long. Dark red, wider and slightly flatter on the upper part, with irregularly serrated edges on the top, a short fissure on the inside, and sometimes a small section of yellow style remaining at the lower end. It is light, soft, without any oily luster, and becomes brittle and easily breaks after drying. It has a peculiar smell, is slightly irritating, and tastes slightly bitter.

【Identification】 (1) The powder of this product is orange-red. Epidermal cells are oblong in shape from the surface, with thin, slightly curved walls. Some have protruding outer walls that are nipple-like or villous, and fine textures can be vaguely seen on the surface. The epidermal cells at the top of the stigma are villous, 26 to 56 μm in diameter, with sparse texture on the surface. Calcium oxalate crystals are aggregated in thin-walled cells and appear in granular, round, or spindle-shaped forms.
