[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Salix babylonica of the Salicaceae family.

[Original form] Deciduous shrub to small tree, up to 10m tall. The branches of the current year are nearly glabrous or stellately pubescent. Leaves are alternate; petiole is 1-2.5cm long, with pubescent soft hairs; leaf blade is obovate-elliptical, 7-14cm long, 3-6.5cm wide, with short acuminate apex, cuneate base, acute, glabrous above, with stiff hairs on midrib and lateral veins below, and single pubescent hairs in axils: margin with sharp serrations; lateral veins 12-14 pairs of arcuate. The raceme has 3-6 branches in a panicle, and the peduncle has dense rusty clusters of rough and stiff hairs; the pedicel is 4-6mm long; the sepals are round-ovate, 5-6mm long, 3-4mm wide, slightly emarginate at the tip and fringed; the stamen filaments are glabrous; the style is glabrous, with three deep lobes at the tip, the capsule is nearly spherical, 4mm in diameter, and the persistent style is 9-12mm long; the fruit pedicel is 1.5-2cm long. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruiting period is July-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows in sparse forests or bushes.

[Chemical composition] The leaves of the elm tree contain clethric acid, as well as large amounts of manganese, cobalt, copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, cadmium, nickel, calcium, and alkali metal elements (lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium) [1].
