[Source] The whole plant of Rubus trifoliata, a plant of the Rosaceae family. Harvested in summer and autumn. Dry in the sun.

[Original form] Upright small shrub, 1 to 2 meters high. The stems and branches are glabrous and have sharp barbed prickles. The trifoliate compound leaves are alternate, the leaflets are lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate, 4-6 cm long, 8-15 mm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, gradually narrowed at the base, with serrated edges, smooth on both sides, and pink-green; the petioles are 3-4 cm long with tiny prickles; the stipules are bristle-like. 1 to 2 flowers are axillary or terminal, with pedicels 1 to 2 cm long, and both the pedicel and the calyx have fine soft hairs and prickles; sepals are lanceolate, and the appendages are leaf-like, linear, and prickly; petals are white, obovate, with short soft hairs on the outside, shorter than the calyx; stamen filaments are densely covered with soft hairs. Aggregate fruit, fleshy, juicy, orange-yellow when ripe. Flowering period is from April to May.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in sparse bushes in mountain valleys. Distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan and other places.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet and slightly sour, neutral.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, detoxifies, removes dampness and stops dysentery. Expel roundworms.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of tonsillitis, conjunctivitis, dysentery, scabies, and rheumatoid arthritis: 50 cents to 1 ounce of the root of the barbed thorn. Decoction in water.
