[Other names] Big Bull Pleione, Chaotianzi, Niuwangci

[Source] It is the root and stem bark of the leguminous plant Caesalpinia pilosula . Harvested in summer and autumn.

[Original form] Deciduous climbing shrub with hooked thorns. Young branches densely covered with brown short hairs, old branches reddish brown. The leaves are bipinnate, 20 to 30 cm long; there are 3 to 10 pairs of pinnae, with petioles; each pinna has 6 to 9 pairs of leaflets. The raceme is terminal, 15 to 30 cm long; the flowers are yellow, the stamens slightly protrude from the calyx, and the pods are narrow and oblong, 6 to 10 cm long, nearly woody and slightly curved. The seeds are oblong, brown, patterned, and about 1 cm long. Flowering and fruiting period is August.

[Habitat distribution] Grown on roadsides or streams in plains, hills or low slopes. Distributed in Shaanxi and other places.

[Nature and flavor] It tastes astringent, hot, and slightly toxic.

【Function and indications】Root: relieves exterior symptoms and induces sweating. Treat colds, headaches, muscle and bone pains and bruises. Stem bark: used externally to treat alcoholic nasal congestion.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: Root: boil into soup, 3-5 qian; or soak in wine.
