[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of the Lamiaceae plant Salvia salvia officinalis.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 13-45cm high. Stem erect, striated. The rhizome is thick. The scaly leaves are densely grown on it and are oval-triangular in shape. There are two types of leaves: basal leaves and stem leaves. The petiole of the basal leaves is 2-20cm long; the leaf blades are all ovate or triangular-ovate, 2-11cm long, about one-tenth the width or about equal to the length, with small round teeth on the edges and densely covered with long soft hairs on both sides. The inflorescence is in a whorl of 6 flowers, forming a raceme 10-20 cm long; the lower bracts are similar to the leaves, while the upper bracts are ovate with long, soft hair-like cilia; the calyx is broadly bell-shaped and two-lipped; the corolla is blue-purple or purple, with yellow base, the corolla tube is about twice as long as the calyx, the corolla is two-lipped, the upper lip is straight and semicircular, the lower lip is three-lobed, and the middle lobe is the largest; the developed stamens extend under the upper lip, and the filaments are flat; the reduced stamens are short; the style is hidden, with two unequal shallow lobes at the tip; the front of the disk is slightly swollen.
