【Other name】 Starling tree

[Source] Medicinal material source: bark, branches and leaves of the red yew tree of the Cornaceae family.

[Original form] Deciduous shrub, 3m high. The bark is purple-red; the old branches are blood red, glabrous, often covered with white powder, cm; the leaves are ovate to elliptical, 4-9cm long and 2.5-5.5cm wide; there are 5-6 pairs of lateral veins. Resolution: The corymbose inflorescence is terminal; the flowers are small, yellow-white; the calyx is altar-shaped, with 4 lobes and triangular calyx teeth; the petals are 4, ovate-elliptical; the stamens are 4, attached to the outside of the disk, the filaments are slightly flattened, the anthers are light yellow, 2-chambered, T-shaped; the flower blood is cushion-shaped; the ovary is nearly obovate, sparsely covered with appressed short soft hairs, and the stigma is disc-shaped, wider than the style. The drupe is obliquely oval, with persistent style. When ripe, it is white with a slight bluish purple tint. The style is persistent. The core is prismatic, with three veins on each side. The flowering period is June-July, and the fruiting period is August-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in mixed woods or mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests at an altitude of 600-2700m.

[Chemical composition] The red stem bark of the red yew contains cyanidin 3-galactoside, also known as bilberry anthocyanin (idaein), a large amount of cyanidin 3-arabinoside and a trace amount of delphinidin monoglycoside.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; slightly astringent; cold

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; stops dysentery; stops bleeding. It is used for damp-heat dysentery, nephritis, rheumatic joint pain, red and swollen eyes, otitis media, hemoptysis, and blood in the stool.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 6-9g. For external use: take appropriate amount, decoct in water and wash with the water; or grind into powder and sprinkle on the body.
