[Source] It is the seeds of the chickpea plant of the legume family.

[Original form] Annual herb. The stem is erect, branched, with white glandular hairs, and 25 to 50 cm high. Stipules with several long teeth; pinnate compound leaves, 9-15 leaflets, opposite or alternate, broadly ovate or rectangular, sometimes obovate, 10-15 mm long, obtuse at apex, densely serrated at margin, with prominent veins. The flowers are solitary with long pedicels; the corolla is white or colorful, 8 to 10 mm long; the calyx is 6 to 8 mm long, with linear calyx teeth, 2 to 3 times the length of the tube; the corolla is butterfly-shaped, protruding outside the calyx, the standard petal is broad and clawed, and the wing petals are separate; there are 10 stamens, in bundles of 9 and 1; the ovary is sessile, the style is incurved, and glabrous. The pods are rectangular, swollen, 18 to 25 mm long, about 12 mm wide, and have very fine short hairs. There are 1 to 2 seeds, which are wrinkled and have a fine tip at one end, shaped like an antelope's head, and are white, red or black.

[Habitat distribution] It is cultivated in Gansu, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei and other places.

[Chemical composition] The seeds contain about 20% protein (18.4-29.8%), fatty oil 4.6-6.10%, starch 44.89-52.80%, minerals 2.36-4.67%, and crude fiber 2.4-10.06%. The protein is a complete protein, and the lipids also contain cholecalcitonin phospholipids, with a cholecalcitonin content of 116-238 mg% and a phospholipid content of 102-136 mg%. In addition to starch and crude fiber, carbohydrates also contain 0.8-1.2% arabinose and glucan, of which the ratio of L-arabinose to D-glucose is 3:7, and 6.7% water-soluble sugar, including glucose, sucrose and chickpea sugar. Beans contain trypsin inhibitors, which are relatively heat-resistant and need to be cooked for a long time to be destroyed. Freshly harvested seeds contain 1031 mg/100 g of vitamin C, almost 1 times that of newly harvested wheat, but the vitamin C content of the beans after they have been left to age is only 2.5-6.0 mg/100 g. In addition, the seeds contain 308 mg% phosphorus, 231 mg% calcium, 6.9 mg% iron, 354 mg% phytic phosphorus, as well as vitamin E, thiamine, pantothenic acid, etc.

[Pharmacological action] An ingredient isolated from Huihui beans can promote the growth of guinea pigs with vitamin C deficiency, and its effect is similar to hesperidin. When rats were fed lipids isolated from Huihui beans, the serum lipids of dietary hypercholesterolemia, including free cholesterol, cholesterol esters, phospholipids and triglycerides, were significantly reduced. The lipid content of liver tissue was also significantly reduced, and the cholesterol end products excreted in the feces were increased. Its mechanism of action may be to increase the excretion of cholesterol end products.
