【English Name】 Fructus Schisandrae Sphenantherae

[Other names] Schisandra chinensis, Schisandra chinensis, Red bell

[Source] It is the fruit of Schisandra sphenanthera Rehd. Et Wits. of the Magnoliaceae family . The fruits are picked in autumn when they are ripe but have not yet fallen off, and the fruit branches and impurities are removed and then dried.

【Original form】 Deciduous woody vine. The branches are slender, reddish brown, and have lenticels. The leaves are elliptical, obovate or ovate-lanceolate, 5-11 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, with a short pointed tip, a cuneate or nearly circular base, and sparsely serrated edges. The flowers are unisexual, dioecious, solitary or 1-2 flowers grow in leaf axils, orange-yellow; pedicels are slender, 2-4 cm long; tepals are 5-9; stamens are 10-15, and the stamen column is obovate; the purple pistil is nearly spherical, with 30-50 carpels. The aggregate fruit is 6 to 9 cm long; the berry is nearly spherical, 6 to 9 mm long, red and fleshy. The flowering period is from May to July, and the fruiting period is from August to October.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in sunny open areas and bushes. It is mainly produced in Henan, Shaanxi and Gansu.

[Properties] The fruit is irregular in shape, small in size, 2 to 5 mm in diameter; the surface is dark red or brown, the skin is thin and dull, and contains 1 to 2 seeds. The seeds are kidney-shaped, yellow-brown in color, and slightly granular.

[Chemical composition] The seeds contain schizandrin A, schisantherin A, B, C, D, E, etc.

【Functions and indications】Astringent, nourishing, promoting the production of body fluids, and stopping diarrhea. Used for lung deficiency cough, thirst due to lack of body fluid, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, and chronic diarrhea.
