[Original form] Dahlia is an annual to perennial herb that can reach 1.5m in height. It has tuberous roots underground. The stem is erect, smooth and much branched. Leaves are opposite; petiole bases are extended and almost connected, petiolules have slightly narrow wings; leaf blades are pinnate-divided twice, or upper leaves are pinnate-divided once, lobes are oval, edges have rounded and blunt serrations, green above, gray-green below. The head inflorescence spreads horizontally or slightly drooping, with a diameter of 6-12cm and long stalks; the involucral bracts are 2 layers, the outer layer is shorter and green, the inner layer is thin, scaly, and fused at the base; there are 8 ligulate flowers, red, purple-red or pink, neutral or female; the tubular flowers are yellow, bisexual, and pregnant. Achenes oblong or obovate, apex rounded; pappus lacking or with 2 inconspicuous teeth. Flowering period is July-August.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The tuber is long spindle-shaped, slightly curved, some are flattened, and some are cut into two pieces, 6-10cm long and 3-4.5cm in diameter. The surface is grayish white or off-white, unpeeled yellow-brown, with obvious and irregular longitudinal grooves, a stem base mark at the tip, and the tip and tail are fibrous.
