[Original form] Large deciduous tree, up to 30 meters high and 1.3 meters in diameter. The bark is gray to gray-brown, with open branches; the twigs are drooping, orange-brown to purple-brown, and hairless. The leaves are densely clustered on short branches; linear, flat, 1.5 to 3 cm long, pointed at the tip, gray-green, with ridges on both sides, and 1 to 2 stomatal bands on the sides of the ridges. The flowers are monoecious, with inflorescences borne at the top of branchlets; male inflorescences are rectangular, sessile, yellow, with many short-stalked anthers arranged in a spiral; female inflorescences are nearly spherical, with a few to many scales with 2 ovules, borne on larger bracts. The cones are ovate-rectangular, 3 to 4.5 cm long, bluish-purple to gray-brown, with nearly circular scales, slightly curved inward, entire, and bracts elongated, long and gradually pointed at the apex, erect, and purple. The seeds are 3 mm long, have long wings, and are 6 mm wide. Flowering period is May.
