[Original form] An upright, fleshy, bare shrub or tree, up to 7 meters high, containing white latex. The bark is grayish white with shallow cracks; the old branches are cylindrical, or obtusely triangular to hexagonal; the twigs have 3 to 5 thick and wavy wings, with a pair of sharp thorns in the depression of the wings. The ears are simple and small, with short petioles, emanating from the wing edges, and fleshy; obovate, with a rounded tip, 8-12 cm long, 3-4 cm wide, entire, with a cuneate base, dark green above and lighter below. The cyme consists of 3 bracts. With short petiole, born in the depression of the wing; the involucre is hemispherical, about 1 cm in diameter, and yellow; the flowers are unisexual, without perianth, and the male and female flowers are born in the same involucre; the male flowers are numerous, with one stalked stamen, usually with very small bracts; the female flowers are sessile, born in the center of the involucre, with only one superior ovary with three chambers, and the style is separate and 2-lobed. Capsule spherical, about 1 cm in diameter. Flowering period is from March to April.

[Habitat distribution] It grows near villages or garden edges and is mostly cultivated for ornamental and hedge purposes. Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Fujian and other places.

[Preparation] Peel off the green skin, slice and stir-fry until browned.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, cold, poisonous.

[Functions and indications] Reduce swelling, promote bowel movements, and kill parasites. Treat ascites, acute gastroenteritis, swelling, and scabies.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, 1 to 2 qian; make into pills; for external use: grind into powder and apply on skin.

[Additional prescriptions] ① For treating ascites: fire vine glue (the white glue that flows out when the stem is cut), fried rice noodles, and herb frost. Mix the above three ingredients into small pills, dry them in the sun, and coat them with cinnabar. Adults take one dollar, children take seven fen, boiled in water with hawthorn, amomum villosum and white peony root, take once every other morning. After taking the medicine, when you have diarrhea four or five times, you can take warm white porridge to stop the diarrhea. Abstain from salt and foods made with salt for 100 days.
