[Source] It is the whole herb of Agave spinulosa of the Chenopodiaceae family. Cut it when it blooms in summer and dry it in the sun.

[Original form] Annual herb, up to 1 meter tall. Branchlets are hard, flat, green, often with white-green stripes, glabrous or with very short papillate setae. The leaves are alternate, filamentous-cylindrical, fleshy, 1.5 to 4 cm long, 1 to 2 mm wide, enlarged near the base, with a sharp thorny tip, sessile, and green. Flowers bisexual, axillary, usually forming spikes at the top of each branch; bracts 2, conical or ovate, with a fine apices at the apex; tepals 5, conical or pointed ovate, erect, imbricately arranged; stamens 5; stigma long filamentous, 2-branched. The fruit is spherical, pink, truncated at the apex, and enclosed in winged tepals. Flowering period is from July to September. The fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in sandy soil, sand dunes, grasslands, and rocky hillsides. Distributed in Jilin, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia and other places.

[Chemical composition] Contains betaine, succinic acid, oxalic acid and polysaccharides composed of arabinose, galactose, rhamnose, xylose, galacturonic acid and amino sugars.

[Pharmacological action] Intravenous injection of the decoction, aqueous extract and alcohol extract of Acanthus spinulosus significantly lowered the blood pressure of anesthetized animals, but had no effect on the heart rate and amplitude of anesthetized cats. Cutting off the vagus nerves on both sides or the sympathetic nerves at the same time could not change its antihypertensive effect. Those who collected it during the period of young leaves, flowering and fruiting all showed a hypotensive effect. Betaine has a mild antihypertensive effect on anesthetized animals, but is ineffective on hypertensive dogs. A saponin separated by electrolysis and chromatography can lower the blood pressure of anesthetized dogs and hypertensive rats. However, chromatography and chemical reactions failed to confirm that the preparation of Salsola spinulosa (trade name "Zeng'ershou") contained salsa alkaline and salsa alkaloids, and its antihypertensive effect is questionable. No poisoning was found after using double the dosage for 1 week.
