[Source] This product is the dried rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (or Ligusticum wallichii Franch.), a plant of the Umbelliferae family. In summer, when the nodes on the stem are significantly prominent and slightly purple, they are dug up, the mud and sand are removed, and they are dried on a kang in the sun before the fibrous roots are removed.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 30 to 60 cm tall, with irregular nodular fist-shaped rhizomes, and stem masses at the top of the nodules. The outer skin is yellowish brown and has an aroma. The stems are often clustered, erect, branched at the top, with hollow internodes and lower nodes that are obviously swollen into root-like shapes and easy to root. Leaves are alternate, two to three times pinnate. It blooms in summer, with terminal compound umbels, double hanging fruits that are oval, 5-ribbed, and have narrow wings. There is one oil tube in the dorsal rib, two in the lateral ribs, and four on the junction surface.

There are numerous oil chambers scattered in the parenchyma tissue, which are round, oval or irregular in shape, light yellow-brown in color, and small near the cambium, gradually increasing in size outwards; the parenchyma cells are rich in starch granules, and some contain calcium oxalate crystals, which appear as round clumps or clusters of crystals.
