Poria cocos is a traditional Chinese medicine with high medicinal value and good health care effects for some diseases. In our lives, many medicines use Poria cocos as the main ingredient, but there are still many taboos that need to be paid attention to when taking Poria cocos.

[Other names] Sea cucumber (Common Chinese Herbal Medicines in Tibet), Jiangche (Handbook of Plateau Chinese Herbal Medicine Treatment).

[Source] It is the whole young herb of the plant Polygonum multiflorum of the Dipsacus asper family. Harvest in June and July.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 30 to 90 cm tall. Root cylindrical, branched, brown outside. The stem is erect, unbranched, and has longitudinal stripes. The leaves are lanceolate, 10 to 20 cm long, 1.5 to 2 cm wide, with irregular thorn-like serrations on the edges. Several flowers are arranged in whorls to form a spike inflorescence; bracts are 3 in whorls, sessile, with thorn-like serrations on the edges; flowers are lavender and lip-shaped. Achenes, with tubercle-like protrusions and black spots on the surface.

【Habitat distribution】Grows on hillsides and fields. Distributed in Tibet and other places.

【Chemical composition】 Contains alcohol saponins and glycosides.

【Functions and indications】 ① "Common Chinese Herbal Medicines in Tibet": "It strengthens the stomach, induces vomiting, and reduces swelling. It is used for stomachache and other symptoms; it can be used externally to treat sores, carbuncles, swelling and pain."

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 1 to 2 qian; large doses may induce vomiting. For external use: grind into powder and sprinkle.
