Medicinal material source: the whole plant of the plant Atractylodes japonica of the family Caryophyllaceae.

Shrub to small tree, 2-5m high. Often has thorns. Leaves are alternate; petiole is 3-5mm long; leaf blade is elliptical to oblong-elliptical, 3-9cm long, 2-5cm wide, with rounded or short acuminate tip, nearly rounded base, 1 gland on each side, glabrous on both sides; 3 basal veins. The racemes are axillary or terminal, 3-6 cm long, with pale yellowish white flowers and 4 mm in diameter; there are 4-5 sepals; 4-5 petals; there are many stamens, and the appendages at the tip of the connective are hairy; the disk is composed of fleshy free glands located outside the stamens; the ovary has 1 chamber, with 3 parietal placentas, each with 2 hanging ovules. The berries are spherical, 4-5mm in diameter, purple-black when ripe, with a long pointed persistent style. 2-6 seeds. The flowering period is late autumn and early winter.
