[Source] It is the black seeds of the sesame plant of the sesame family. The fruits are harvested in August and September when they turn yellow and black. The whole plant is cut and tied into small bundles with the top facing upwards. They are dried in the sun, the seeds are removed, impurities are removed, and the bundles are dried again.

[Original form] Sesame (Bencao Yanyi), also known as: square stem (Wu Pu Bencao).

[Habitat distribution] Cultivated in various parts of my country. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Shandong, Shanxi, Henan and other places. It is also produced in other places.

[Properties] The seeds are flat oval, obtuse at one end and pointed at the other, 2-4 mm long, 1-2 mm wide and about 1 mm thick. The surface is black with reticular wrinkles or without them. Small wart-like protrusions can be seen under a magnifying glass. The edges are smooth or ridged, with a dot-like brown hilum at the tip. The seed coat is thin and papery, and the filmy endosperm can be seen in the longitudinal section. The embryo is erect, with two large off-white cotyledons, rich in oil. It has a faint smell, light taste, and a fresh fragrance when chewed. The best ones are large, black, plump and free of impurities.

【Chemical composition】 The seeds contain up to 60% fatty oil. The oil contains glycerides of oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, arachidic acid, tetracosanoic acid, docosanoic acid, as well as sterols, sesamin, sesamolin, sesamol, vitamin E, etc. The seeds also contain 18.45 mg of folic acid, 0.48 mg of niacin, 0.64% of sucrose, 0.65% of lecithin, pentosan, protein and a large amount of calcium.

[Pharmacological action] The water extract of the whole herb has a stimulating effect on the isolated guinea pig uterus. Oral administration of seed extract to rats can lower blood sugar and increase glycogen content in liver and muscle, but large amounts can reduce glycogen content. Feeding rats with 0.2 ml/100 g body weight of black sesame oil for 10 days can increase the ascorbic acid and cholesterol content in the adrenal glands. Histochemical examinations also proved that the adrenal cortex function was inhibited to some extent; especially in the late pregnancy, the increase in ascorbic acid content was more obvious. Black sesame oil injected into normal or ovariectomized rats tends to increase hematocrit. The sesamin contained in the oil has a synergistic effect on the fly-killing effect of pyrethrins. The seeds have a laxative effect, and the cake after oil extraction is toxic to livestock, causing colic, tremors, dyspnea, flatulence, coughing and depression. Calves fed too much black tallow may develop eczema, hair loss and itching.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3 to 5 qian; or made into pills or powder. For external use: decoct in water for bathing or mash and apply on affected areas.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat deficiency of the five internal organs, replenish energy and strength, and strengthen tendons and bones: Jusheng is steamed and stir-fried nine times, and then stored. Take two grams each time, soak in water and wrap in cloth, remove the skin and grind again, filter the juice with water and boil it for drinking, or cook it into porridge with glutinous rice.
