[Source] Medicinal material source: the root and root bark of Celastrus orbiculatus of the Celastraceae family.

[Original form] A short-stemmed Celastrus vine-like shrub that can reach 7m in height. Branchlets with large, raised lenticels. Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is 5-15mm long; leaf blade is oblong narrow elliptic or obovate lanceolate, 4-11mm long and 3-6cm wide. Flowers are dioecious; male inflorescences are terminal and axillary, with terminal inflorescences up to 5 cm long, inflorescence axis branches are short, and axillary inflorescences have 1-3 flowers; female inflorescences are all axillary, with 3-7 flowers, and the flowers are yellow-green; male flowers have a cup-shaped disk, stamens are attached to the edge of the disk, and the reduced pistil is short columnar; female flowers have reduced stamens, the ovary is free from the cup-shaped disk, the style is slender, the stigma is 3-lobed, and each cleft has 2 forked branches, and the capsule is nearly spherical, about 1 cm in diameter. There are 3-6 seeds with orange-red aril.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in mountain jungles or roadsides.

[Chemical composition] The root contains 1β-acetoxy-2β, 8β, 9α-tribenzoy-loxy-4α, 6α-dihydroxy-β-dihydroagarofuran, 1β-acetoxy-8β, 9α-dibenzoyloxy-2β-(furan-β-carbonyloxy)-4α, 6α-dihydroxy-β-dihydroagarofuran, and dulcitol.

【Nature and flavor】 Spicy; neutral

【Functions and indications】 Expel wind and dampness; promote blood circulation and relieve pain; detoxify and reduce swelling. It is mainly used for rheumatic pain, traumatic injury, hernia pain, sores, swelling and infection, herpes zoster, eczema and snake bites.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g. For external use: grind into powder and apply on affected area.
