The stem is cylindrical, 2.5-5mm in diameter, much branched, with fine longitudinal stripes, and purple-red at the base. Basal leaves are numerous and rosette-shaped; petiole is 6-18cm long, with broad leaf sheath at base, clasping stem; leaf blade is triangular-ovate in outline, ternately pinnate, with 3-4 pairs of lobes at first, 1-2 pairs of pinnae at second, terminal lobe is ovate or oblong, acuminate at apex, cuneate or rounded at base, irregularly 2-3 lobes or serrated, 2-3cm long, 0.6-2cm wide, smooth and glabrous; leaves on upper stem are few and long-petiolated. The compound umbel is terminal or lateral, 3-10cm in diameter; the involucral bracts are 0-2, linear; the rays are 4-8, 0.5-8cm long; the involucral bracteoles are 0-3, linear; the petals are oblong, dark purple, light purple or white; the calyx teeth are narrow triangular or linear; the style is curved downward. The fruit is oblong, 5-7mm long, 2-4mm wide, dark brown, with linear protrusions on the dorsal and middle ridges, and slightly wider and thickened lateral ridges; there are 2-3 oil tubes in the grooves, 4-6 commissures, and the ventral surface of the endosperm is straight.
