[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of the grass family Poaceae.

[Original form] White grass is a perennial herb. With horizontal rhizomes. The culm is erect, solitary or clustered, 20-90cm high. The leaf sheaths are loosely phimotic and nearly glabrous, those at the base are densely nearly straddling, and those at the top are shorter than the internodes; the ligule is short, with cilia 1-2 mm long; the leaf blades are narrowly linear, 10-25 cm long, 5-8 (-12) mm wide, and glabrous on both sides. Inflorescence erect or slightly curved, 5-15cm long, about 10mm wide; main axis angular, glabrous or rarely sparsely hairy; setae soft, fine, slightly rough, 8-15mm long, gray-green or purple; spikelets usually solitary, ovate-lanceolate, 3-8mm long; first glume minute, apex obtuse, acute or toothed; veins inconspicuous, second glume 1/3-3/4 as long as spikelet, apex awn pointed, with 1-3 veins; first floret male, rarely or neutral, first lemma as long as spikelet, thick membranous, apex awn pointed, with 3-5(-7) veins, first palea transparent, membranous or degenerate; second floret bisexual, second lemma with 5 veins; apex awn pointed, same as its inner palea papery; scales 2, cuneate, apex slightly concave; stamens 3, anther apex without hairs; styles united near base. The caryopsis is oblong, about 2.5mm long. Flowering and fruiting period is from July to October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on hillsides and drier places at an altitude of 800-4600m.

[Properties] The plant is cylindrical in shape, some with branches of varying lengths. 30-60cm long, 0.2-0.4cm in diameter. The surface is yellowish white or light yellow, slightly shiny, with longitudinal wrinkles, obvious nodes, slightly protruding, occasionally with residual fibrous roots, and internodes of varying lengths, 1.5-3cm long. The texture is hard, with a white pith in the center of the cross section, and the cortex and pith are not easy to peel off. Odorless, light taste.
