[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi of the Lamiaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb. The rhizome is horizontal, with creeping branches on the nodes. The stem is erect, 50-100cm high, obtusely quadrangular, with four deep grooves, densely covered with white appressed sparse soft hairs along the edges, the petiole in the middle of the stem is up to 1.7cm long, concave on the abdomen and convex on the back, covered with white appressed soft hairs; the leaf blade is hard and papery, ovate or oblong, 2-5cm long, 1-3cm wide, the one in the middle of the stem is the largest, and the ones at both ends of the stem gradually become smaller, with short acuminate to long acuminate at the apex, nearly rounded or truncate and decurrent at the margin, and scattered with white small sparse soft hairs on the upper side and only along the veins on the lower side. Inflorescence racemose, terminal or ventral, 3.5-9cm long, with few flowers, inflorescence axis densely covered with white upward curved pubescence; pedicels 3mm long, densely covered with glandular pubescence; bracts ovate or oblong, those above the middle of the inflorescence are 4-7mm long, all with short petioles, entire, and sparsely white pubescence; calyx about 2.5mm long, about 4mm long when fruiting, covered with glandular pubescence, the upper edge of the mouth covered with sparse pubescence, the scutellum is extremely developed, 2.2mm high, erected in fruit and obovate, up to 5mm high. The corolla is yellow to purple-red, about 2.2 cm long, covered with glandular short soft hairs on the outside and glabrous inside. The diameter of the middle part of the corolla tube is 1.8 mm, and the front part of the base is slightly oily and swollen. The crown brim is two-lipped, the upper lip is semicircular, 2.8 mm wide, concave, and slightly emarginate at the apex. The middle lobe of the lower lip is triangular-ovate, and the lobes on both sides are ovate, about 2 mm wide; there are 4 stamens, the front pair is longer, slightly exposed, with fertile semi-ampules, and the degenerate semi-ampules are obvious. The posterior pair of stamens are shorter and have full ampules; the style is filiform, with a sharp tip and slightly cracked; the disk is raised in front and extends into a very short ovary stalk at the back; the ovary is 4-lobed, and the posterior pair of lobes is slightly developed. The flowering period is June-July, and the fruiting period is July-August.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown under subtropical broad-leaved forests.
