Medicinal material source: the whole herb of the large-leafed bear's palm of the Melastomataceae family.

Herbs or small shrubs, up to 1m tall. The upper part of the stem is nearly fleshy, cylindrical, nearly glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Leaves opposite; petiole 3-8.5cm long, grooved, with long soft hairs on both sides of the groove; leaf blade papery, broadly ovate or nearly elliptical, acuminate at apex, cordate at base, 11-23cm long, 7-13cm wide, surface green, densely covered with fine chaff and sparse short rough hairs; dorsal surface usually purple-red, densely covered with chaff and fine hairs, margin finely serrated or almost entire, with ciliate margin; basal veins 7, but one pair is often 5-14mm away from the base. Umbel, terminal, peduncle 2-4cm long, growing to 6cm when fruiting, covered with fine soft hairs and sparse long soft hairs, pedicel about 1cm long, covered with fine soft hairs; calyx about 1cm long, covered with fleshy prickles at the base, lobes slightly concave at the tip, covered with sparse prickles outside, covered with fine soft hairs inside; petals rose red, broadly ovate, slightly concave at the tip, with ciliate margins; stamens nearly equal in length, anther base with 2 small tubercles, connective base swollen into a short spur; ovary ovate, with a membranous crown at the tip, and a ring of ciliate margins at the crown brim. The membranous crown at the tip of the capsule is slightly exposed outside the persistent calyx; the persistent calyx is covered with swollen fleshy spines at the base. The flowering period is from June to July, and the fruiting period is from December to January of the following year.
