The snout is prominent, with a small hook-like shape at the tip. The eyes are large, nearly round, and the space between the eyes is slightly raised. There are two nostrils on each side, the anterior nostrils are short tubular; the posterior nostrils are round, the mouth is large, the upper jaw is prominent and slightly longer than the lower jaw, the teeth in both jaws are strong and sharp, both have 3 rows, and there are large canine teeth at the front end, 8-16 in the upper jaw; 6-7 in the lower jaw, and the outer row of teeth in the lower jaw do not tilt outward. There are 10-15 large flat teeth in the middle row of the vomer, and a small canine at the front and back of the tooth base. The gill openings are wide. The anus is located in the middle and front part of the body. The body is smooth and scaleless. Lateral pores obvious. The origin of the dorsal fin is slightly above and in front of the base of the pectoral fin. There are pectoral fins but no pelvic fins. The back and hips are connected to the tail fin at the back. Dorsal side of body silvery grey. Large individuals are dark brown. Ventral side milky white. The edges of the dorsal, anal and caudal fins are black, and the pectoral fins are gray.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: It often lives in sea areas with bottom of river mud or rocky reefs, generally with water depth of 50-80m. It is a voracious eater, usually feeding on shrimps, crabs, fish and cephalopods. The spawning period is from April to July; in the South China Sea, it is from June to July. The spawning capacity is 1 million eggs, which are ovoid and 1.6-1.7mm in diameter. Larvae and juveniles can undergo metamorphosis during their development. There are seasonal migrations. For example, the sea eels along the coast of Fujian and Zhejiang migrate north to reproduce in spring and summer, and migrate south to hibernate in autumn and winter.
