[Source] Medicinal material source: The tuberous root of the Menispermum officinale plant of the Menispermaceae family.

[Original form] Hainan terrestrial perennial vine. The root tubers are spherical or irregularly spherical and exposed on the ground. The old stems are slightly lignified, the branches are thick with straight grooves, the branches and leaves contain light yellow or white sap, and the whole plant is hairless. Leaves are alternate; petioles are thick, usually nearly as long as or slightly shorter than the leaf blades, and peltate; leaf blades are triangular-rounded, 10-16cm long and wide, sometimes smaller, with short acuminate apex, rounded or nearly truncate base, sometimes slightly concave, margin shallowly wavy, or sparsely angularly coarsely serrated, sometimes nearly entire; 5 palmate veins, reticulate veins with small papillae, thin papery. Flowers are small, unisexual, and dioecious; male plants have compound cymes, axillary, often born on short branches; peduncle 3-7cm long, 3-5 pseudocymes, 2-4.5cm long, cymes with 3-5 flowers; bracteoles narrowly lanceolate, pedicel 1-3mm long; male flowers: sepals 6 (-8), yellow-green, arranged in 2 whorls, the outer whorl spoon-shaped cuneate, about 2.5mm long, the inner whorl slightly wider; petals 3 (-4), orange-yellow, 1.5-2mm long, 2-2.5mm wide, one of which is often deeply concave; stamen column about 1mm long; female plants have capitate cymes, peduncle 2.5-5cm long, swollen at the top; female flowers: perianth bilaterally symmetrical, sepal 1, nearly ovate, about 0.4mm long, born on one side of the flower; petals 2, broadly ovate or conchoidal, slightly larger than sepals, fleshy; ovary broadly obovate. The drupe is red, broadly obovate, with a slightly fleshy pedicel, an endocarp of about 1 cm in diameter and 8 mm wide, with 4 rows of hook-like carvings on the back, about 20 seeds in each row, and a perforated placenta. The flowering period is March-April, and the fruiting period is April-July.

【Habitat distribution】Ecological environment: Growing in dense forests in mountains.

【Properties】 1. Identification of properties: The tuber is slightly spherical, with a diameter of 5-20cm. The cross-section of slices or strips is grayish yellow or light yellow, and the tendons (trivascular bundles) can be seen arranged in concentric rings. It has a faint smell and a bitter taste.

[Chemical composition] The root tuber of Hainan Dibao contains crebanine, dehydrocrebanine, oxocrebanine, palmatine, tetrahydropalmatine, corydalmine, isoscoulerine, stepharine, tetrandrine, isotetrandrine, homoaromoline and cycleanine and other bioalkaloids.

[Pharmacological action] The main bioalkaloid, clibanine, has affinity for dopamine receptors in the brain.

[Identification] Physical and chemical identification (1) Take 1g of crude powder of this product, add 10ml of ethanol, soak overnight and filter. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness and 4 ml of dilute hydrochloric acid was added to the residue to dissolve it. Take 1 ml of the filtrate and add 2 drops of improved potassium bismuth iodide test solution to produce a large amount of orange precipitate; add potassium mercuric iodide test solution to produce a large amount of yellow-white precipitate. (Check for bioalkali) (2) Observe the fresh cross section or powder of the root tuber under ultraviolet light (254nm) and it will show bright yellow fluorescence.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; slightly cold

【Functions and indications】Analgesic; reducing swelling and detoxification. Mainly used for stomachache; pain caused by trauma; sores, boils, carbuncles and swellings

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 6-9g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application.
