[Source] Medicinal material source: The algae of the plants seaweed and staghorn seaweed of the Seaweed family (Endophyceae).

[Original morphology] 1. The body of the sea lily is purple-red, yellowish brown to brown, soft and leathery, tough after drying, 4-10cm high, up to 15cm, clustered, with short main branches, cylindrical or sub-cylindrical, about 4mm wide, irregularly dichotomously branched, and often constricted at the branches. The internal tissue is loose or hollow, so the algae is sometimes flattened. The outer layer of the cell wall is seaweed gum, and the inner layer is cellulose. Tetrasporangia are scattered in the cortex and divide in a cross shape. The mature spore capsules are spherical or hemispherical, very small, protruding from the body surface and densely distributed on the algae. The holdfast is disc-shaped.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: 1. Grown on rocks in the mid-tidal zone and the lower part of the high-tidal zone.

[Properties] Identification of properties (1) The algae of the sea lily are purple-red or purple-brown, growing in clusters, 4-8 cm long, and soft and leathery. There are disc-shaped adventitious roots at the base. The main branches are cylindrical, with irregular forked branches and often constricted at the base. Old branches are hollow. It has a fishy smell and a salty taste.

【Chemical composition】 1. Seaweed contains a large amount of trace elements. The mucus contains agarobiose dimethyl acetal, methyl D-galactoside, methyl D-xyloside, 3,6-anhydro-L-galactosedimethyl acetal, D-galactose, sulfate polysaccharides composed of galactose and xylose, taurine, and D-aspartic acid.

【Nature and flavor】 Salty; cold

【Meridian】 Lung; spleen; large intestine

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat; helps digestion; dispels wind and dampness; softens and resolves phlegm. It is used for fever due to fatigue, bone steaming, diarrhea, dysentery, rheumatic pain, cough, goiter, and hemorrhoids.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3-9g; or soaked in wine.

【Note】 1. "Yangsheng Yaoji": "Eating this food can cause coughing." 2. "Diet Therapy Materia Medica": "Men should not eat this food for a long time. It will cause chronic diseases, damage the waist, kidneys, meridians, blood and qi, and make the feet cold and numb, and lose color."

[Additional prescription] "Nanyue Zhi" says: "Monkey sunflower is also called deer horn. Deer horn is named after its shape, and monkey sunflower is named after its slippery nature."
