[Other names] Tufangji, Qingmuxiang [Sichuan]

[Source] It is a plant of the genus Aristolochia in the family Aristolochiaceae, Aristolochia austroszechuanica CP Chien et CY Cheng, mss., and its root is used as medicine. Wild products can be dug in all seasons; cultivated products can be dug up around November after growing for 3 to 4 years, the roots can be cleaned of soil, cut into pieces and dried in the sun or over a low smokeless fire.

【Original form】 Woody vine. The roots are thick and cylindrical, often with constriction, making the roots appear like beads of varying sizes. The outer bark is thick and hard, with scaly cracks, earthy brown, grayish white in cross section, and solid in powder. There are round or triangular shaped vascular tubes filling the central column, forming a special texture. The branches are covered with rusty yellow hairs when young, which gradually fall off later, and the old branches are almost smooth. The leaves are alternate, with petioles 4 to 6 cm long and densely hairy. The leaf blades are mostly cordate, 10 to 20 cm long, similar in width, acute at the apex, cordate at the base, entire, with 5 main veins and 2 to 3 lateral veins, which are obviously raised on the back of the leaf. The veinlets are raised into a lattice-like pattern, and the veins are densely covered with short hairs. Dark purple flowers bloom in early summer, 1 to 4 flowers in axillary racemes, with long pedicels densely covered with rusty hairs; flowers are irregular, the perianth is tubular, about 2 cm long and horizontal at the base, with 12 veins, then bends nearly 180° into a capsule parallel to the tube, about 1 cm long, then expands into a nearly quadrangular limb, the limb is flat, 5 to 6 cm in diameter, slightly 3-lobed, the throat pore is slightly biased to the adaxial side, with fine warts on the upper side, and obvious vein network and densely covered with short hairs on the lower side; the syncytium is at the base of the perianth tube, nearly spherical, about 5 mm in diameter, the stigma is 3-lobed, the lobes are erect, and the outer side is in an inverted U shape and extends downward; there are 6 stamens, without filaments, and the anthers are opposite to the inverted U-shaped concave part extending downward from the stigma; the ovary is inferior, linear, only slightly thicker than the pedicel, and densely covered with hairs.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on hillsides, forest edges, etc., occasionally cultivated. Distributed in provinces such as Sichuan and Guizhou.

[Cultivation] Prefers warm and humid environment. It is suitable to be planted in sunny places with deep, fertile and loose soil; it can also be planted near rocks, slopes, edges of fields and courtyards. It is mostly propagated by layering and cuttings. Layering is mostly done in Sichuan between October and November. Choose healthy and strong vines, pull them close to the ground surface and bury them with soil. Bury a section every 2 to 3 nodes and water them frequently. After the nodes take root, they can be cut off and planted separately from the mother plant. Cutting propagation is mostly done in spring between February and March. Choose solid branches, cut them at 2-3 nodes with scissors, and insert them obliquely into the soil. The row and plant spacing depends on the fertility of the soil, generally 4-5 feet. During the cutting period, attention should be paid to watering to keep the soil moist. When the cuttings are alive and the vines are about 1 foot long, you can build a frame and tie the vines.
