[Source] It is the whole herb or rhizome of the plant Pteris cretica of the Lepidoptera family. Harvest in autumn, wash off the mud and sand, and dry in the sun.

[Original form] Perennial herb, up to 65 cm tall. The rhizome is hard and short, running horizontally, and densely covered with reddish-brown drill-shaped scales. Leaves are closely grown, with petioles up to 25 cm long, straw-colored, shiny, and erect; leaves are nearly leathery, glabrous; 3-4 times pinnate-shaped, lanceolate, 20-40 cm long, 5-12 cm wide; lower pinnae are ovate-acicular, obliquely spreading, 5-10 cm long, 2-5 cm wide; pinnules are oblong or lanceolate; ultimate lobes are cuneate, truncate at the apex, dentate, base cuneate, decurrent, veins obvious below, and bifurcated. The sori are terminal, with 1 to 2 on each lobe. The sori cap is gray-brown, semi-cup-shaped, as wide as the leaf margin, and cracks outwards.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in wetlands under forests or in shrubs. It is widely distributed throughout the south of the Yangtze River and as far north as southern Shaanxi.

[Chemical composition] The leaves contain vitexin, syringic acid, protocatechuic aldehyde and protocatechuic acid.

[Clinical application] Treatment of bacillary dysentery and enteritis: 2 qian of fresh goldenrod leaves, chewed and swallowed, twice a day; or 10-20 ml of 50% goldenrod decoction, taken 3 times a day; it can also be dried and ground into powder, 0.6 fen each time, taken 3 times a day. 103 cases were treated and 98 were effective.
