[Source] This product is the dried aerial part of Clinopodium polycephalum (Vaniot) CYWu et Hsuan or Clinopodi -um chinensis (Benth.) O. Kuntze, a plant of the Lamiaceae family. Harvest before flowering in summer, remove mud and sand, and dry in the sun.

[Properties] The stem of this product is square columnar, with grooves on all four sides, opposite branches, 30 to 90 cm long, 1.5 to 4 mm in diameter, densely covered with gray-white hairs on the upper part, sparsely or almost hairless on the lower part, internodes 2 to 8 cm long, gray-green or green-brown on the surface; brittle, easy to break, with uneven cross section, with pith or hollow in the center. The leaves are opposite, petiolate, and mostly wrinkled and broken. The intact leaves are oval when flattened, 2 to 5 cm long, 1.5 to 3.2 cm wide, with sparse serrations on the edges, green-brown on the upper surface, gray-green on the lower surface, and both sides densely covered with white hairs. It has a slight fragrance and tastes astringent and slightly bitter.

[Identification] (1) Surface observation of the leaves of this product: the antipodal walls of the epidermal cells are wavy and the stomata are straight-axis. Non-glandular hairs are slender and numerous, consisting of 1 to 9 cells, up to 1440 μm long, with some basal cells swollen and up to 102 μm in diameter; the middle cells are 10 to 55 μm in diameter, and some cells are constricted with wart-like protrusions on the surface. The head of the glandular scales has 7 to 11 cells, with a diameter of up to 60μm, and the stalk is single-celled and very short. The head and stalk of the small glandular hairs are both single-celled, and the head diameter is about 20μm.
