[Source] Medicinal material source: branches and leaves of Thuja koreana, a plant of the Cupressaceae family.

[Original form] Korean thuja, a tree, up to 10m tall, with a breast diameter of 30-75cm. The bark of young trees is reddish brown, smooth and shiny; the bark of old trees is reddish brown with shallow longitudinal cracks. The branches are flat or drooping, and the crown is conical. The leaves are scale-shaped, 1-2mm long, obtuse or slightly pointed at the apex, with obvious or unclear glandular dots on the back; the scale leaves at the bottom have white powder. The cones are ellipsoidal-spherical, 9-10mm long, 6-8mm in diameter, dark brown when ripe; there are 4 pairs of seed scales, which are arranged in opposite directions and are thinly woody, with 2-3 pairs at the bottom, each with 1-2 seeds. The seeds are oval, flat, about 4mm long and 1.5mm wide, with wings on both sides, each 1.5mm wide.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: It grows in moist, humus-rich valleys at an altitude of 700-1400m, but can also grow on mountain ridges and exposed rock crevices.

[Properties] The large branches are flat, the small branches are flat, alternate, and arranged in a plane. The scales are dimorphic, arranged alternately, 4 in a node, and the pair located on the upper and lower surfaces of the twigs are closely attached; the scales on the underside of the twigs are slightly powdery. Slight smell, slightly astringent taste.

[Chemical composition] The volatile oil of the leaves contains α-pinene, fenchone and thujone.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; astringent; cold

【Functions and indications】 Cooling blood and stopping bleeding; clearing away heat and stopping dysentery; resolving phlegm and relieving cough. It is used to treat vomiting blood due to blood heat, nosebleed, blood in stool, blood in urine, metrorrhagia, dysentery, chronic bronchitis, whooping cough.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 10-20g.
