[Source] Medicinal material source: The leaves of Rhamnus utilis Decne., a plant of the Rhamnaceae family.

[Original form] Frost-green deciduous shrub or small tree, up to 4m tall. Young branches are glabrous, twigs are brown or purple-red, slightly smooth, opposite or nearly opposite, and often with thorns at the branch ends; leaves are opposite or nearly opposite; petioles are 0.5-1.5cm long, with grooves on the upper side; stipules are lanceolate, often with sparse hairs, persistent; leaf blades are papery, elliptic, oblong or obovate-elliptic, 4-15cm long, 2-6.5cm wide, with acuminate or acuminate apex, cuneate base, finely serrated margins, glabrous above or only with sparse pubescence on the midrib, with golden yellow pubescence along the veins or in the vein axils below, 5-6 pairs of lateral veins, and obvious reticulate veins. The flowers are unisexual, dioecious, yellow-green, and the pedunculate cymes grow at the branch ends or leaf axils; the calyx is 4-lobed, with ovate lobes; the petals are 4, oblong, small or absent; the male flowers have 4 stamens, the anthers are narrow and long, T-shaped, and are attached to the base of the calyx fissure together with the petals; the ovary of the reduced pistil is flattened spherical, and the style is 2-lobed; the ovary of the female flower is spherical, the style is long, the stigma is 3-lobed, and there are 4 reduced stamens. The drupe is nearly spherical, 6-8mm in diameter, black when ripe, and has 2 cores. There is a persistent calyx tube at the base, and the fruit pedicel is 5-12mm long and glabrous. The seeds are nearly spherical with a short groove at the dorsal base. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from May to August.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in sunny mountains, hills, hillside grass, shrubs or sparse forests below 1500m above sea level.
