Deciduous tree, up to 20 meters high. The bark is yellowish brown with gray spots and wrinkles, and cracks longitudinally when old. The young branches are covered with flat stiff hairs, which fall off later. Simple leaves are alternate; ovate or narrowly ovate, 5-13 cm long, 3-8 cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, rounded or broadly cuneate at the base, with a single serration above the base, both sides with strigosus, and lateral veins extending straight to the serration edge; petiole 7-13 mm long; stipules linear. Flowers are unisexual and monoecious; male flowers are in umbels, born in the leaf axils at the base of new branches; female flowers are solitary in the leaf axils at the top of new branches, with stalks; perianth is 5-lobed and persistent; the number of stamens is the same as the number of stigma segments; ovary is hairy, 1-chambered, with 2 stigmas. The drupe is nearly spherical or ovoid, 8 to 10 mm long, covered with flat stiff hairs; the fruit stalk is short. Flowering period is from April to May. The fruiting period is from August to October.

Grown on roadsides and riverbanks. Distributed in East China, Central China, South China, Southwest China and Shanxi.
