[Source] This product is the dried root tuber of Ampelopsis japonica (Thunb.) Makino, a plant of the Vitaceae family. It is dug up in spring and autumn, the sand and fine roots are removed, and it is cut into longitudinal petals or oblique slices and dried in the sun.

[Properties] The longitudinal petals of this product are oblong or nearly spindle-shaped, 4 to 10 cm long and 1 to 2 cm in diameter; the periphery of the cut surface is often curled inward, with a raised ridge in the middle; the outer skin is reddish brown or reddish brown, with longitudinal wrinkles, fine transverse lines and long transverse lenticels, easy to fall off layer by layer, and the fallen parts are light reddish brown. The oblique slices are oval, 2.5 to 5 cm long and 2 to 3 cm wide. The cross-section is off-white or light reddish brown with visible radial textures. The edges are thicker and slightly raised or slightly curved. It is light, hard and brittle, easy to break, and dust flies out when it breaks. It has a slight smell and a sweet taste.
