The efficacy and function of Quercus alba

White Quercus is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine and is very helpful for many diseases. Below we will briefly introduce the white oak.

[Source] It is the involucre with galls on the fruit of Quercus white oak , a plant of the Fagaceae family.

[Original form] White oak, also known as: Diamond oak, white reverse oak, oak, oak, white bucket, oak, white oak, white oak. Deciduous tree, up to 25 meters tall. Branchlets densely covered with grayish yellow to grayish brown hairs. The leaves are alternate, leathery, obovate to obovate-elliptical, 7-14 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, obtuse at the apex, cuneate at the base, with wavy teeth on the margin, sparsely stellate hairs or nearly glabrous on the upper side, and densely gray stellate hairs on the lower side; the petiole is 3-10 mm long. Flowers are unisexual and monoecious; male flowers are in catkins, 6-7 cm long, with 6 tepals, covered with soft hairs; 6 stamens, rarely 8; female flowers are solitary or in clusters of 2-3, with 3-chambered ovary and 3-4 stigmas. The cupule is shallowly cup-shaped, 4-8 mm high and 8-11 mm in diameter, with ovate-lanceolate felt sheets arranged in an imbricate manner. The nut is conical or oblong, about 1.2 to 2.4 cm high and 0.7 to 1.1 cm in diameter. Flowering period is April. Fruiting period is October.

[Habitat distribution] Grown on hillsides and forests. Distributed in the Yangtze River Basin and various provinces in southern China.

[Chemical composition] The cupules and bark of white oak contain tannins, and the seeds contain 30% starch.

【Functions and indications】 Strengthens the spleen and eliminates stagnation, regulates qi, clears heat and improves eyesight. Treat hernia, malnutrition, and red and painful eyes.

[Additional prescription] ① To treat hernia in adults and rice-like urine in children: decoct three to five white oak vines into a soup and drink it with sugar.
