[Source] It is a plant of the genus Clerodendron in the Verbenaceae family, Clerodendron cyrtophyllum Turcz., and its roots and leaves are used as medicine. Available all year round. The roots are sliced ​​and dried in the sun; the leaves are washed and dried in the shade or used fresh.

[Original form] Deciduous shrub, up to 3 meters high. The bark is grayish white, the old branches are yellowish brown, and the young branches are covered with soft hairs. The leaves are opposite, nearly leathery, elliptical, ovate or elliptical-lanceolate, 5-15 cm long, 2.5-6 cm wide, acuminate or acute at the apex, rounded or gradually narrowed at the base, entire, with scattered short white hairs on both sides. In summer, white tubular flowers bloom on the treetops, forming loose, broad, flat, conical cymes; sepals are linear and small; calyx is bell-shaped, generally no longer than 1 cm long, covered with short hairs and glandular dots, with 5 lobes, round-headed, spreading; stamens are 4, slightly didyna, extending out of the corolla, 1 to 2 times longer than the corolla tube; ovary is superior, style is filiform, slightly shorter or longer than the stamens, and stigma is 2 shallowly lobed. The fruit is oval, 5 to 7 mm in diameter, purple-red when ripe, and covered by a persistent calyx.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in mountains, hills, grasslands, roadsides or thickets near forests. It is distributed from central and southern my country to Taiwan.

[Chemical composition] The leaves contain isatis, indican, and flavonoids.

[Pharmacological action] Antibacterial test: The water decoction of this product has a strong antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and dampness, cools blood and detoxifies. Used to prevent and treat epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, epidemic encephalitis B, treat colds and headaches, measles with pneumonia, mumps, tonsillitis, infectious hepatitis, dysentery, and urinary tract infections.

【Usage and Dosage】 0.5~1 liang.

[Additional prescription] 1. Prevention of epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis: 3 jin of Cyperus rotundus root, half a jin each of Imperata root, Amaranthus linen, Honeysuckle vine, Phragmites australis, and Cyperus rotundus, add 30 jin of water, boil until 25 jin, for 50 people. Each person should take half a pound of decoction per day, divided into 3 doses.
