Traditional Chinese medicine is very effective in treating some special diseases, but we still need to understand it before taking it. Today we will talk about some common knowledge about the medicinal material Dianbaiyaozi.

[Other names] Baiyaozi, Mati Xixin, Maogou Moss, Maoya

[Source] Medicinal material source: The tuber of Dioscorea zingiberensis, a plant of the Dioscoreaceae family.

[Original form] Dioscorea zingiberensis is a twining herbaceous vine. The tubers are usually nearly oval, with slender fibrous roots on the outer skin. The stem is left-handed, densely covered with brown short soft hairs when young, gradually becoming sparsely hairy when old. The palmate compound leaves have long petioles; there are 3-5 leaflets, which are elliptic to lanceolate-oblong or obovate-oblong, and sometimes the outermost leaflets are obliquely ovate-elliptic, 2-14cm long, 1-5cm wide, acuminate at the apex, entire, and sparsely appressed pubescent on both sides; there are often fleshy spherical bulbils (vitamin B) in the leaf axils, with pubescent surface, which can produce new plants after falling to the ground. The inflorescence axis, bracts, and perianth are all densely covered with brown or light yellow short soft hairs; the male inflorescence is a racemose or paniculate inflorescence, axillary, the male flowers have short stalks, 2 bracts, one of which has a caudate tip, 6 stamens, and 3 fertile stamens; the female inflorescence is spike-shaped, 1-2 axillary, and the ovary of the female flower is densely covered with soft hairs. The capsule is triangular-oblong, 1.5-2cm long and 1cm wide, with sparse short soft hairs; the seeds are borne in pairs at the top of the axis of each room, and the wings extend toward the base. The flowering period is from July to September, and the fruiting period is from September to November.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in ravines, forests, roadsides or secondary thickets at an altitude of 500-2900m.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet; slightly bitter; neutral

【Meridian】 Pain; Lung; Kidney

【Functions and indications】Nourishes the spleen and kidneys; strengthens the lungs and relieves cough; detoxifies and reduces swelling. It is used to treat loose stools due to spleen deficiency, impotence due to kidney deficiency, spermatorrhea, leucorrhea, chronic cough due to consumptive disease, lack of milk, and nameless swelling and infection.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 10-30g; or soak in wine; or make into pills or powder. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application.
