1. Ginger-shaped Polygonatum

Source: The dried rhizomes of perennial herbs such as Long-leaf Polygonatum, Multi-flower Polygonatum and Curly-leaf Polygonatum, belonging to the genus Polygonatum of the Liliaceae family. There are wild and cultivated ones.

Origin: Mainly produced in Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, Anhui, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi, and also in Gansu, Qinghai and other places.

Collection and processing: It can be collected all year round. Dig up the rhizomes, remove the above-ground parts and fibrous roots, wash off the soil, put them in a steamer, add water and steam until they are oily, take them out and dry them in the sun or in an oven.

Identification of properties: It is an irregular nodule, slightly flat and ginger-shaped, 3 to 10 cm long, 2 to 4 cm wide, and 1 to 2 cm thick. The surface is yellowish brown, rough, with irregular wrinkles, and the above-ground stem scar is disc-shaped and often concave. The fibrous roots are mostly wart-like protrusions and are distributed all over the body. The nodes are obvious and appear as raised, wavy rings. The rest is the same as Polygonatum odoratum.

The best types of Polygonatum are those with enlarged rhizomes, yellow-white color, and horny and shiny cross-section.

Main ingredients: alkaloids, starch, sugar, etc.

Pharmacological effects: 1. Nourishing and strengthening effect.

2. Antibacterial. It has inhibitory effects on Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Trichophyton gypseum, and Epidermophyton koxii.

As a nourishing and strengthening agent, it is often combined with wolfberry, raw rehmannia, astragalus, codonopsis, etc., such as Huangjing Decoction, and can also be combined with Atractylodes macrocephala, Asparagus cochinchinensis, wolfberry root, etc. to soak in wine.

2. Used for pulmonary tuberculosis. Preliminary observations showed good therapeutic effects, which were consistent with the results of laboratory studies. You can use Polygonatum sibiricum paste (5kg of raw medicine can be boiled into 1kg of extract), 4 times a day, 40 ml each time (about 51~54g), for long-term use without side effects.

3. To treat tinea cruris and tinea pedis, apply 2% Polygonatum sibiricum extract topically.
