[Medicinal material] The dried roots are cylindrical, and some are curved like sheep horns.

The surface is grayish yellow or brownish brown, with longitudinal lines and grooves, and occasional transverse cracks (lenticels) and root traces.

The top of the reeds has been trimmed and the bottom is blunt.

The texture is solid and not easy to break.

The cross section is jet black, slightly shiny, and has no cracks.

It is odorless or has a slight burnt smell, tastes sweet, slightly bitter and salty, and is soft and smooth when chewed.

The best ones are those with thick branches, fine skin, firm texture, clean reed heads and black flesh.

Those with small branches, rough skin and reed heads are of inferior quality.

It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Sichuan and Hubei.

In addition, it is also produced in Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi and other places.

Zhejiang has the largest output and the best quality.

[Pharmacological action] Pharmacological action of Scrophularia ningpoensis: ① Antihypertensive effect: When the fluid extract is injected intravenously into anesthetized rabbits, a small amount can first slightly increase the blood pressure and then decrease it; a large amount can only decrease the blood pressure.

The water extract, ethanol water extract and decoction have a significant antihypertensive effect on anesthetized dogs, cats and rabbits; healthy dogs and dogs with renal hypertensive ratio were given an oral decoction of 2g/kg twice a day, which showed a antihypertensive effect. The effect on the latter was more significant than that on the former. When the dose was reduced, the effect was just delayed.

When the toad's heart is perfused, a small amount of fluid extract can show a cardiotonic effect, while a larger dose will cause poisoning and have a dilating effect on the blood vessels in the toad's lower limbs.

②Other effects: Subcutaneous injection of the fluid extract (5 g/kg) into normal rabbits can slightly reduce blood sugar.

p-Mcthoxycinnamic_acid extracted from its roots has an antipyretic effect on rabbits with fever caused by typhoid vaccine.

The infusion has antifungal effect in vitro.

Because it contains saponins, it has a significant hemolytic effect and can cause local irritation.

In addition, the total flavonoid aglycones contained in the plant of the same genus S. grosslwimi have the effects of lowering animal blood pressure, reducing capillary permeability, and promoting bile secretion.

S. nodosa has sedative, blood pressure lowering, cardiotonic, vasodilator and certain anticonvulsant effects.
