White peony root can promote the phagocytic function of peritoneal macrophages in mice. The decoction of white peony root can antagonize the inhibitory effect of cyclophosphamide on peripheral T lymphocytes of mice and restore them to normal levels, indicating that white peony root can restore the low-function cellular immune function to normal.

White peony root extract has a significant inhibitory effect on egg white-induced acute inflammatory edema in rats and has an inhibitory effect on the proliferation of cotton ball granuloma. White peony root has a significant analgesic effect on the writhing reaction induced by acetic acid. When used together with the methanol complex of licorice, the two have a synergistic analgesic effect on the writhing reaction induced by acetic acid. Paeoniflorin, the main ingredient in peony, has a good antispasmodic effect.

1. Liver blood deficiency and irregular menstruation due to blood deficiency. This herb is sour in taste, and can astringe liver yin to nourish blood. It is often used together with cooked rehmannia and angelica sinensis to treat liver blood deficiency, pale complexion, dizziness and palpitations, or irregular menstruation and metrorrhagia, such as Siwu Decoction (Hejijufang). If there is blood deficiency and heat, and menstruation is irregular, it can be combined with drugs such as Scutellaria baicalensis, Phellodendron chinense, and Dipsacus asper, such as Baoyin Decoction (Jingyue Complete Works); if there is metrorrhagia, it can be used together with donkey-hide gelatin, mugwort, etc.

2. Pain in the chest, flanks, abdomen, or cramps in the limbs due to disharmony between the liver and spleen. This product is sour and astringent to liver yin, nourishes blood, softens the liver and relieves pain. It is often used with bupleurum, angelica, white peony root, etc. to treat blood deficiency, liver depression, and rib pain, such as Xiaoyaosan (Hejijufang); it can also regulate the liver and spleen, soften the liver and relieve pain, and is used together with white atractylodes, saposhnikovia divaricata, and dried orange peel; it can treat spleen deficiency and liver hyperactivity, abdominal pain and diarrhea, such as Tongxie Yaofang (Jingyue Quanshu); if used together with costus root, coptis chinensis, etc., it can treat dysentery and abdominal pain, such as Shaoyao Decoction (Suwen Bingjiqi Yibaomingji); if yin and blood deficiency and lack of nourishment to tendons and veins lead to cramps and pain in the hands and feet, it is often used with licorice to relieve the pain, that is, Shaoyao Gancao Decoction (Treatise on Febrile Diseases).

3. Headache and dizziness caused by hyperactivity of liver yang. This product nourishes blood, restrains yin, and calms liver yang. It is often combined with Achyranthes bidentata, Daizheshi, Dragon Bone, Oyster, etc., such as Zhengan Xifeng Decoction and Jianling Decoction (Medical Records of Chinese and Western Medicine)
