Drynaria fortunei is also known as monkey ginger, mainly because its appearance is similar to ginger cubes. As the name suggests, Drynaria fortunei has obvious effects in treating bone diseases. So, what are the effects and functions of Drynaria fortunei? Drynaria fortunei is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine. Found in Kaibao Materia Medica. It is named so because it can cure fractures and mend broken bones. The rhizome is densely covered with small brown scales and looks like a piece of ginger, so it is called monkey ginger. Other names: monkey ginger, Shen ginger, hairy ginger. Source: Fresh or dried rhizomes of perennial herbaceous ferns such as Quercus serrata and Quercus sinensis of the Polypodiaceae family. It grows on tree trunks and rocks. Uniformly wild. 1. Oak fern Origin: Mainly produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Hubei, Fujian, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places. Identification of properties: It is flat and strip-shaped, mostly curved and branched, with different lengths. 4~15 cm long, 1~1.5 cm wide, and about 2~4 mm thick. The surface is light brown to dark brown, densely covered with small scales, soft like hair, and yellow-brown. The scales of those that have been burned have mostly fallen off, appearing brown to dark brown, with raised round scar-like leaf marks on the sides and top. It is light and brittle, easy to break, and numerous yellow dot-like vascular bundles can be seen on the cross section, arranged in rings. Slight smell, light taste and slightly astringent. The ones with brown color and thick stripes are preferred. 2. Pteris sinensis Origin: Mainly produced in Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Tibet and other places. Identification of properties: The rhizome is straight and slender, with few branches, 5 to 17 cm long and 0.6 to 1 cm wide. The small scales on the surface are yellow-brown and easy to break off. After falling off, they turn yellow to light brown. Hard texture, yellow cross section. The rest is the same as the oak fern. Functions and effects: Nourishes the kidney, relieves pain, promotes blood circulation and strengthens tendons. Processing: blanching, depilation and cutting. Nature and flavor: bitter, warm. Meridians: Enters the liver and kidney meridians. Function: Nourishes the liver and kidneys, strengthens tendons and bones, promotes blood circulation and relieves pain. Indications: soreness of muscles and bones in the waist and knees, pain caused by blood stasis due to trauma, chronic diarrhea due to kidney deficiency, tinnitus, and toothache. Clinical application: 1. Treat toothache and bleeding gums due to kidney deficiency (periodontal disease, etc.). Drynaria fortunei has the effect of strengthening physical constitution and can be taken together with Niu Che Shen Qi Pills. If the teeth are swollen, the gums are red, and there is congestion and pain, you can use Drynaria fortunei with Rehmannia root bark, Dendrobium officinale 12g each, and licorice 3g, decocted in water and taken orally. If alveolar abscess is formed or even pus is discharged, use Scrophularia ningpoensis and Beehive. 2. Treat injuries from falls, especially muscle and ligament sprains and closed fractures. It has the effect of promoting blood circulation and relieving pain. It can be combined with other blood circulation and blood stasis removing drugs, such as bone setting powder. External application of this drug can accelerate fracture healing. In addition, it can also treat chronic diarrhea due to kidney deficiency, tinnitus, and weakness of the feet and knees. Precautions for use: It is not suitable for toothache caused by excessive fire, blood deficiency, etc. Dosage: 3~9g, large dose for kidney tonic can be up to 30g. Prescription example: Bone-setting powder: Drynaria fortunei, Sanguisorba officinalis, borax, Chinese angelica, frankincense, myrrh, Dipsacus asper, natural copper, rhubarb, and earthworm, take equal parts, grind into fine powder, mix with vaseline and apply to the affected area. Note: 1. Drynaria fortunei: It is mostly used fresh in Hubei, Shanghai, Zhejiang and other places. In Beijing, the dried raw medicinal material that is cut into 1 cm pieces is called Shenjiang. After being blanched and hair removed, the material is cut into 3 cm segments and is called Gusuanbu. In Tianjin, ginger and drynaria are commonly used. 2. The plant sources of Drynaria fortunei are different. According to the "Handbook of Identification of Chinese Medicines", there are 7 species in 2 families, and the medicinal properties are basically similar. In addition to the ones mentioned in the main text that are commonly used in most areas, the ones that are closely related to the Polypodiaceae family, such as Quercus, Ginger, and Pteris glabra, and the Drynaria fortunei of the Drynariaceae family, and the large-leaf Drynaria fortunei are used as drynaria in different regions. |
