Perennial herb, 30 to 80 cm tall. The underground stems are horizontal, lumpy, thick and uneven. Stems standing, lignified below. The leaves are symbiotic and whorled. The upper leaves generally do not collapse, are sessile, ovate-lanceolate to elliptical, with thorn-serrated edges, and the lower leaves are often 3 to 5 deeply lobed or half-cleft. The central lobe is large, annular, obovate, and the lateral lobes are smaller, with or without stalks. The inflorescence is terminal, with one whorl of leaf-like bracts, deeply palmately divided, and the lobes are spiny; the involucral bracts are 6 to 8 layers, ovate to lanceolate; the flowers are mostly bisexual, or unisexual and polydioecious; all are tubular flowers, with mostly palmate long pappus, and the corolla is milky white; the bisexual flowers have 5 pistils, and the ovary is densely covered with milky white soft hairs; the unisexual flowers are generally female flowers, with 5 atrophic pistils. Achenes are covered with soft white hairs, and the palmate pappus is about 0.8 cm long. The flowering period is from August to October, and the fruiting period is from September to October.

The origin of hot pot is all over the periodontium, mostly growing in bushes and grass on hillsides. It is spread across Henan Province, Shandong Province and other places.

Hot pot picking and processing: harvest in spring and autumn, remove the fine sand, dry it, and remove the roots.

Characteristics of hot pot Chinese medicinal materials: irregular periodontitis, bead-shaped or mass-shaped, cylindrical, slightly curved, with occasional branches, 3 to 10 cm long and 1 to 2 cm in diameter. The surface is gray-brown with wrinkles, horizontal lines and residual roots, and the top has stem scars or residual stem base. The texture is solid, the cross section is yellowish white or grayish white, with scattered orange or reddish brown pits. If exposed for a while, the milky white fibrous crystals can be dissolved. It has a unique aroma and tastes slightly sweet, spicy and bitter.

The nature and flavor of hotpot belong to periodontal warming, spicy and bitter. It enters the spleen meridian, liver and gallbladder meridian, and liver meridian.

The effects and functions of hot pot are to eliminate dampness in the periodontal tissues, strengthen the spleen and stomach, dispel wind and cold, and clear the eyes. It is a dampness-removing medicine.

The clinical medical usage of hotpot is 3 to 10 grams, decocted in water. It is used to treat abdominal distension, diarrhea, edema, athlete's foot, rheumatic pain, colds, and night blindness.

Pharmacological research on hot pot has the effects of preventing gastric disease and gastric ulcer, regulating gastrointestinal motility, resisting liver damage, resisting hypoxia, and blocking nicotine kinase. The water decoction can resist experimental gastritis and gastric ulcer, and has a significant inhibitory effect on gastric acid volume, gastric juice concentration and pepsin specificity. Hemocytic ulcer is an ulcer caused by tissue necrosis due to ischemia of gastric mucosa and circulatory obstruction. Red peony root has a significant effect on this. It also has medicinal value such as nourishing the liver and gallbladder, and resisting oxygen deficiency.

Hot pot ingredients: This periodontal product contains erythropein, 2-carene, atractylodes pachymolide, patchouliene, elemene, acetylablythrin alcohol, and dehydrogenated naringabolol. There is also volatile oil, the main components of which are erythropeone, erythropein, erythrope spirol, etc.
