Effects and functions of Chinese medicine Nardostachys grandiflora

Pine trees are recognized as one of the most cold-resistant plants, and within this large plant species there are many different varieties. Nardostachys is one of them. Its appearance has nothing in common with pine trees, but its surface exudes a strong pine resin scent. And Gansong is also a very good Chinese medicinal material, so what are the effects and functions of the Chinese medicine Gansong?

1. Promotes qi circulation and dispels cold, relieves pain

It is an excellent product for regulating qi and relieving pain. It enters the spleen and stomach meridians, and is good at treating symptoms such as dull stomach pain caused by spleen and stomach deficiency and cold, craving for food and pressure, and chest tightness and discomfort, and epigastric distension and pain caused by cold and qi stagnation. It is especially suitable for treating heart and stomach pain caused by bad qi. The "Compendium of Materia Medica" says: "It can treat "heart and stomach fullness and pain, dissipate fullness and reduce qi, all of which are based on the idea of warming and dispersing."

Therefore, "Kaibao Materia Medica" says: Gansong "treats bad air, sudden heart and abdominal pain and fullness." If it is combined with wind-dispelling and cold-dispersing drugs, the effect will be even better. For example, "Compendium of Materia Medica" states: "For those with heart and stomach pain due to bad qi, ... do not use it together with white aconite."

2. Invigorate the spleen and stomach

Galangal is warm but not hot, fragrant but not dry, sweet but not stagnant. It enters the spleen and stomach meridians to relieve spleen depression and promote stomach qi, making it an important medicine for invigorating the spleen and stimulating appetite. Any symptoms caused by worrying too much and damaging the spleen or having a weak and cold spleen and stomach, such as loss of appetite, tasteless food, abdominal distension after eating too much, fatigue and shortness of breath, pale tongue with white coating, and a deep, slow and weak pulse. It can be used in many ways and will work wonders when used.

As the "Compendium of Materia Medica" says: "Gan Song is a medicine that wakes up the spleen and relieves the stomach. ... It has a fragrant aroma and is used in spleen and stomach medicines. It has the effect of supporting the spleen and regulating qi, stimulating the appetite and digesting food. It is added to Ba Zhen San and San He Powder, which can treat the spleen deficiency and inability of the elderly to eat... It is very harmonious and beautiful."

3. Reducing dampness and removing toxins

Gansong is pungent and fragrant in dispersing action, and its sweet taste can relieve toxicity. When applied externally, it has the function of absorbing dampness and removing toxins. It also enters the spleen and stomach meridians, so it is good at treating beriberi caused by the downward flow of dampness and heat in the spleen and stomach meridians. Symptoms include: itchy and painful toes, dampness and burning sensation, blisters and erosion, etc.

For example, the Compendium of Materia Medica states: "To treat athlete's foot and floating knees, boil the decoction and wash the feet." The Gansong Decoction in the Pu Ji Fang also uses this product with lotus leaves, etc., and boils the decoction to wash the feet, which can absorb moisture and remove toxins and is good for treating athlete's foot.
