[Source] This product is the dried rhizome of Anemone raddeana Regel, a plant of the genus Anemone in the Ranunculaceae family. Dig up in summer, remove the fibrous roots, wash and dry.

[Properties] This product is in the shape of a long spindle, with pointed and slightly curved ends. The proximal end is more bulging. 1 to 3 cm long, 2 to 7 mm in diameter. The surface is brown to brown-black with fine longitudinal wrinkles. The enlarged part often has 1 to 3 root scars that appear as fin-like protrusions, and occasionally 3 to 5 inconspicuous segments. It is hard and brittle, easy to break, with a slightly flat cross section, off-white or gray-brown, and slightly horny. Odorless, tastes light at first then slightly bitter and spicy.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: Epidermal cells are arranged in one row, tangentially elongated, with thickened outer wall. The cortex is composed of more than 10 rows of round thin-walled cells. The vascular bundles are extra-tough, with more than 10 arranged in a ring, phloem cells are wrinkled, there are 6 to 24 xylem vessels, and the cambium is not obvious. The rays are broad, the pith is large, and is composed of round, thin-walled cells. The thin-walled cells are filled with starch granules. The powder is grey-brown. There are numerous starch granules. Single granules are round or oval, with a diameter of 2 to 11 μm. The hilum is dot-shaped or short-slit-shaped, and the stratification is not obvious. Compound granules are composed of 2 to 4 sub-granules. The epidermal cells are reddish brown, yellow or bright yellow, with corky and thickened outer walls, often with ridges or tumors protruding into the cells. Reticular, spiral or ladder-shaped vessels are common, with a diameter of 10 to 33 μm, and there are few vessels with marginated pits.
