1. Arisaema

Ingredients: Contains saponin, benzoic acid, mucilage and excessive tapioca starch.

Nature and flavor: bitter, pungent, warm, harmful. It enters the lung, liver and spleen meridians.

Efficacy: Dehumidifies, relieves cough and resolves phlegm, dispels wind and stops convulsions. Pharmacological experiments have shown that the saponins contained in it can irritate the gastric mucosa, causing mild nausea and vomiting, which reflexively causes increased bronchial metabolism and produces an expectorant effect. The test shows that this product also has significant sedative, antispasmodic and analgesic effects.

2. Polygala

Ingredients: Contains saponin, polygala acid, epoxy resin, human fat oil, etc.

Nature and flavor: pungent, bitter, slightly warm. It enters the lung and heart meridians.

Efficacy: Nourishes yin and blood, resolves phlegm, clears the orifices, and eliminates carbuncles. The saponins contained can irritate the gastric mucosa and reflexively cause expectoration. The saponins contained in it can stimulate the gastric mucosa to produce phlegm. The pure polygala acid contained in it has the effect of expectoration. It also promotes the metabolism of bronchial mucosa. Its expectorant effect is similar to that of Citrus grandiflorum, but the intensity of its effect is slightly inferior. It is often used in combination with other medicines as an expectorant to treat chronic bronchitis and cough with phlegm caused by various reasons.

Side effects: Taking large doses internally may cause nausea and retching. Patients with stomach disease and gastric ulcers and pregnant women should use it with caution.

3. Aster

Ingredients: Contains aster saponin, asterone, quercetin, etc.

Nature and flavor: bitter, sweet, slightly warm. It enters the lung meridian.

Efficacy: Relieve cough and reduce phlegm. Traditional experience suggests that this product can reduce phlegm and relieve cough; and experiments have confirmed that this product can significantly enhance the secretion function of the respiratory glands, making phlegm thinner and easier to cough up. Its antitussive effect is not significant. The test shows that this product has an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteus, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, etc. It is mainly used to treat cough with excessive phlegm and uncomfortable coughing and vomiting.

4. White mustard

Ingredients: Contains sinigrin, human fat oil, myrosinase, mustard alkaloids, etc.

Nature and flavor: pungent, warm. It enters the lung meridian.

Efficacy: Warming the lungs and resolving phlegm, promoting qi and dissolving stagnation, unblocking meridians and relieving pain. As an expectorant for nausea and vomiting, white mustard oil has a slight irritation to the gastric mucosa, causing a slight nausea, which in turn increases the metabolism of bronchitis and reduces phlegm. It is suitable for cough with clear and thin sputum, fullness and dull pain in the chest and flanks.

Side effects: Excessive intake can cause gastroenteritis, diarrhea, abdominal pain and other symptoms.

5. Peucedanum chinense

Ingredients: White peucedanum contains pyranocoumarins: white peucedanum lactones A, B, C and D. Peucedanum peucedanum contains furanocoumarins: peucedanum glycoside and peucedanum serrata.

Nature and flavor: bitter, pungent, cold. It enters the lung meridian.

Efficacy: Reduces qi and resolves phlegm, dispels wind-cold and wind-heat. It has a significant effect on improving respiratory metabolism, but has no significant antitussive effect. In clinical medicine, it is often used in combination with other Chinese medicines to treat wind-heat cough, thick phlegm and qi reversal, such as subacute bronchitis.
