How to eat American ginseng and its taboos

Contraindications of taking American ginseng

There are many contraindications to taking American ginseng. The following points need to be noted:

1. American ginseng cannot be taken together with radish. Because American ginseng replenishes Qi (warms and replenishes vital energy) and white radish releases Qi (cools, clears heat and detoxifies), these two foods are contradictory. Not only should they not be eaten from a nutritional point of view, but these two foods are also incompatible, which can easily cause allergic reactions or even poisoning.

2. Do not drink strong tea while taking American ginseng. Because tannic acid will destroy the active ingredients in American ginseng, and tea contains a large amount of tannic acid, it is best to drink tea 2 to 3 days after taking American ginseng. It is also best not to drink coffee, as coffee also has a certain impact on the effects of American ginseng.

3. Be alert to adverse reactions. Some people will experience a drop in body temperature, chills, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and loss of appetite after taking American ginseng; some will experience delayed menstruation and dysmenorrhea; others will have allergic reactions, with scattered blisters of varying sizes appearing on the upper and lower limbs and abnormal itching. After stopping the medication, the blisters will be absorbed and disappear on their own.

4. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that American ginseng is a cooling medicine and is good for replenishing qi and nourishing yin. If you have a cough with phlegm, excessive saliva, or edema, you should avoid taking American ginseng, otherwise it will aggravate your condition. In addition, "do not supplement unless you are deficient." If you are not feeling unwell, you should not take American ginseng lozenges frequently.

How to Eat American Ginseng

The most convenient way to use American ginseng for home tonic is to cut it into slices and hold it in the mouth. Use about 4 grams of Kangmei American ginseng slices every day, chew and swallow until it has no taste. You can also grind American ginseng into fine powder and drink it with water instead of tea. If you have enough time, you can also stew it in water or steam it with eggs. Adding American ginseng when cooking porridge, soaking wine, or stewing chicken can also have a tonic effect.

1. Oral method: Steam the skinless American ginseng in a rice cooker to soften it, then cut it into thin slices with a knife and put it in a glass bottle. Take one tablet at a time, 2-4 grams per day, hold it in your mouth before breakfast and after dinner, and chew it carefully.

2. Powder method: Grind the American ginseng into fine powder, 5 grams each time, wrap it with gauze or filter paper, put it in a cup, pour in boiling water, cover it and drink it after about 5 minutes. You can repeat the process several times until there is no taste.

3. Soaking and steaming method: Slice the original American ginseng, put 2 to 5 grams into a porcelain bowl every day, add appropriate amount of water and soak for 3 to 5 hours. Seal the bowl, then steam it in a pot for 20 to 30 minutes, and take it half an hour before breakfast.

4. Steaming method: Grind the American ginseng into fine powder. Mix 5 grams of American ginseng powder with an egg each time, and take it after steaming.

5. How to make soup: Cut the raw American ginseng into thin slices and add 5 grams each time when making soup. Take vegetable soup and medicine together, once a day.
