The efficacy and function of Chuanlianzi

Toosendan is a plant with relatively high medicinal value. It can relieve various pains, treat tinea capitis, kill insects and expel parasites, inhibit the respiratory center, resist botulism, poisoning, anti-fungal, and promote intestinal digestion. Because of this, Toosendan seeds have a relatively high clinical application in medicine. 1. The efficacy and effects of Toosendan

Soothes the liver and relieves heat; promotes qi and relieves pain; kills insects. It is mainly used for pain in the abdomen, ribs and sides; hernia pain; abdominal pain caused by worms; and tinea capitis. Used for distension and pain in the chest, flanks, abdomen, hernia pain, and abdominal pain caused by worm accumulation.

① "Ben Jing": It is used to treat febrile diseases, typhoid fever, excessive heat, restlessness and madness, kill three kinds of insects and scabies, and benefit urination.

② "Materia Medica": It is used to treat severe fever, madness, insanity, restlessness and depression, and should be treated with hot spring bath.

③ "Zhenzhunang": It is used to treat upper and lower abdominal pain and sudden heart pain.

2. Pharmacological effects of Toosendan fruit

1. Anti-insect effect

This product has the effect of expelling ascaris. The active ingredient is toosendanin. Its ethanol extract has a strong effect. Compared with sandalwood, its effect is slow and lasting. Low concentrations (1:5000-9000) of toosendan have a significant excitatory effect on the whole suum Ascaris suum and its segments, which is manifested by increased spontaneous activity, intermittent abnormal and violent contractions, and disruption of the regularity of movement, which lasts for 10-24 hours. Toosendanin is believed to have a direct effect on the muscles of the roundworm. Toosendan can also accelerate the metabolism of adenosine triphosphate in the worm body, resulting in energy shortage and leading to contractile spasm and fatigue. Finally, the worm body cannot attach to the intestinal wall and is expelled from the body. Therefore, clinically taking Toosendan can delay the expulsion of worms, about 24-48 hours, and most of the expelled worms are still active.

2. Inhibitory effect on the respiratory center

The phrenic nerve discharge and diaphragm electromyography were recorded in rats to observe the effect of toosendan on respiration. The results showed that respiratory failure caused by large doses of toosendan (2 mg/rat, intravenous or intramuscular injection) was mainly due to its inhibitory effect on the central nervous system. The experiment of directly administering toosendanin (0.01-0.15 mg/mouse) to the respiratory center of the medulla oblongata supports the above conclusion. The central nervous system stimulant nikethamide has a slight antagonistic effect on the respiratory depression caused by toosendan. Toosendanin had no significant effect on the spontaneous electrical activity of the cortex of awake rabbits.

3. The role of animals that resist botulism

For mice poisoned by a lethal dose of botulism, if toosendanin is administered within 6 hours after infection, the survival rate can reach over 80%; for monkeys poisoned by botulism, more than half can be cured if treated 24 hours after infection; it also has a protective effect against type C botulism; and when used in combination with antivenom, the dosage of antivenom can be significantly reduced. Azadirachtin can counteract the inhibitory effect of botulinum toxin at the neuromuscular junction.

4. Antifungal

The alcohol extract of Melia azedarach has a strong antifungal effect.

5. Promote intestinal movement

Toosendan seeds can promote intestinal muscle tension and cause spasmodic contractions leading to abdominal pain and diarrhea. Therefore, there is no need to use laxatives when expelling ascarids.

3. Clinical Application

1. Treatment of acute mastitis

Crush the seeds of Melia azedarach with the skin and kernel, dry them in the sun, fry until slightly yellow, and grind into fine powder. Take 3 grams of Melia azedarach powder and 2 taels of brown sugar each time, mixed with 100-200 ml of rice wine or boiled water, 100-200 ml, 20-250 ml per day, for 2-5 times in a row. A total of 43 cases were treated, of which 34 had no suppuration at the initial diagnosis. All were cured within 3 days after taking the medicine for 2 to 4 times.

2. Treatment of tinea capitis

Roast the seeds of Melia azedarach until they turn yellow, grind them into fine powder, and mix them with cooked lard or vaseline to make a 50% ointment. First, shave or cut the patient's hair short, wash the scabs with clean water, then wash it once with 5-10% alum water, wipe it dry, and apply ointment (about 2-3 mm thick) once a day for 10 consecutive days as a course of treatment. Generally, it can be cured in 2-3 courses of treatment. This method has been used to treat more than 4,000 patients with tinea, with an effective rate of over 98%.
