Extended reading: Physiological effects of Bidens pilosa

A water decoction or alcohol infusion made by mixing equal amounts of Bidens pilosa L. and Dichroa haizhouensis was orally administered to rats at a dose of 10 g (raw drug)/kg/day for five days. It had a significant anti-inflammatory effect on formaldehyde-induced and egg white-induced "arthritis". The decoction made from a mixture of Siegesbeckia scabra and Dichroa haizhouensis is equally effective when taken orally, indicating that Bidens pilosa can replace Herba Bidens as an anti-inflammatory drug. Bidens pilosa, Dichroa haichuang and Siegesbeckia sibiricum alone had no significant effect, suggesting that they have a mutually reinforcing effect. It is also effective if they are temporarily combined and applied after the preparations are made, which means that their effects are enhanced after mixing, rather than that new ingredients are generated. Although the total bioalkaloids and steroids isolated from the compound have anti-inflammatory effects, their effects are weak and they do not seem to be the main ingredients. It contains a large amount of bile alkaloids, which are not anti-inflammatory ingredients, but can cause side effects such as salivation and tearing. The ethanol extract of Bidens pilosa has an antibacterial effect on Gram-positive bacteria in vitro, and the flowers and stems also have an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus.
