Most Chinese people have the habit of using Gastrodia elata stewed with chicken as a nourishing medicinal food and using Gastrodia elata as a good medicine for treating dizziness. There is some truth to that. The first time people knew that Gastrodia elata was a tonic was in the mid-1960s. At that time, the unprecedented Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution began, and a wave of catching "capitalist roaders" swept across the country, with big-character posters flying everywhere and expressing opinions freely. One of the big-character posters was accompanied by a cartoon, which reported and exposed Director Diao of the Panlong District (Town) Federation of Industry and Commerce. The big-character poster claimed that the capitalist-roader Diao Yanwang (because Director Diao was born with bulging eyes, that is, his eyeballs were a little bulging and he was serious about not smiling) had serious bourgeois ideas, led a corrupt life, and often ate stewed Gastrodia elata and Panax notoginseng chicken... Because my parents worked in the commercial system, the impression was particularly deep. Later, in the mid-1980s, counterfeiting was more common. Because Gastrodia elata is a valuable drug, it is inevitable that unscrupulous drug dealers would adulterate it. At that time, I had graduated from Jiangjin Medical School and had been assigned to work in Fenggao District (Town) Health Center for several years. I was hired by the County Health Bureau as a specially invited drug supervisor. Once, the Health Bureau invited an expert from the Chongqing Drug Administration to talk to us about how to identify the authenticity of Gastrodia elata. Chinese medicine experts summarize the authentic Gastrodia elata in three sentences: first, the parrot beak (the Gastrodia elata buds are red and curved, like a parrot beak, second, the smell of rat urine, and third, the dot-shaped horizontal stripes. Only those with these three characteristics are authentic Gastrodia elata. I have been engaged in clinical work of traditional Chinese medicine for a long time, and have cured many patients with vertigo using the Pinellia, Atractylodes and Gastrodia Decoction from Cheng Guopeng's "Medical Insights". Banxia, Baizhu and Tianma Decoction is composed of: 10 grams of Pinellia, 15 grams of Atractylodes, 12 grams of Tianma, 15 grams of Poria, 15 grams of Tangerine Peel, 10 grams of Licorice, 15 grams of Jujube, and 5 slices of ginger. The medicine is simple but effective. The key points of clinical diagnosis are dizziness, nausea and vomiting, or excessive sputum and poor appetite. I remember that in the late 1990s, I used Pinellia, Atractylodes and Gastrodia Decoction to cure a relative's vertigo. He Moumou, female, about 60 years old. Suffering from vertigo for several days, nausea and vomiting, and poor appetite. I used Pinellia, Atractylodes and Gastrodia Decoction, and the patient recovered after two doses. She was very grateful and said: I didn't expect that you used so little medicine and the effect was so good. I have also seen a Chinese doctor in a rural town. He picked up so many herbs that they were like cow medicine. The medicine jars could not hold them all. The residue filled a large colander (a bamboo product used to cook rice in Sichuan and Chongqing), but it still did not work. Gastrodia elata, also known as Dingfengcao, has the effects of calming the liver and extinguishing wind, dispelling wind and stopping convulsions. It is mainly used to treat dizziness, headache and other symptoms caused by liver deficiency, internal liver wind or hyperactivity of liver yang. It can also be used in combination with liver-calming and yang-suppressing drugs to treat dizziness and headaches caused by hypertension, such as Tianma Uncaria Decoction. It can also be used to treat exogenous wind, tetanus, spasm, convulsions and other symptoms, such as Yuzhen Powder. However, it is not suitable for treating exogenous wind-cold, dizziness and headache; dizziness, shortness of breath and fatigue or blood deficiency caused by qi deficiency, as well as yang deficiency, fluid retention, dizziness and vertigo. Of course, most middle-aged and elderly people are strong on top and weak on the bottom, so it is still beneficial for them to eat some medicinal food made from Gastrodia elata chicken. |
