Coptis chinensis is a general term for various perennial plants of the genus Coptis chinensis in the Polygonaceae family, and is also the name of a Chinese herbal medicine. In reference literature in mainland China, "Coptis chinensis" usually refers to Coptis chinensis. In my country, Coptis chinensis is mainly used for medicinal purposes, but in Europe and the Middle East, their Coptis chinensis usually refers to several other species of Coptis chinensis used for medicinal purposes, with bright red stems. It has a fragrant aroma, a slightly bitter and astringent taste, sticks to the teeth when chewed, and feels like sand. Harvest when the leaves and stems wither in autumn or before budding in the next spring. Remove the rootlets, scrape off the epidermis, cut into petals or segments, string them in strings and dry them or dry them directly. The traditional Chinese medicine rhubarb has the effects of attacking food stagnation, clearing away cold and dampness, removing fire, dispersing blood, removing blood stasis, and removing toxins.

Coptis chinensis is the dried root and underground rhizome of Rheum palmatum L., R.tanguticum Maxim.ex Balf. or Rheum officinale Baill. of the Polygonaceae family. The traditional Chinese medicines of Rheum palmatum and Coptis tanguticum are called Peking University Rhubarb, and their main producing areas are Qinghai Province, Gansu Province and other places. The medicinal rhubarb is called southern coptis chinensis in traditional Chinese medicine, and its main producing area is Sichuan. Harvest in autumn when the leaves and stems wither or before buds emerge in the next spring. Remove the roots, scrape off the epidermis, slice and dry, use raw, or stir-fry with wine, steam with wine, or stir-fry with charcoal.

This product is cylindrical, conical, elliptical or irregular in shape, 3 to 17 cm long and 3 to 10 cm in diameter. The surface of those without the epidermis is yellow-brown to brown-red, and some of them have milky white reticular patterns and scattered stars (heteromorphic conducting tissues). The remaining epidermis is dark brown, with many rope holes and coarse wrinkles. The texture is firm, some are slightly soft in the center, the cross section is light reddish brown or yellowish brown, and granular; the pith of the rhizome is open, with stars ringed or scattered; the root wood is relatively developed, with radial lines, obvious cambium rings, and no stars. It has a fragrant aroma, a slightly bitter and astringent taste, and sticks to your teeth when you chew it, feeling like pebbles.
